The Pixies (Physiological Information eXtraction from ImagE Sequences) project has been made possible thanks to the support of the French Department of Education, Research and Technology (Ministère de l'Education Nationale, de la Recherche et de la Technologie), through a specific funding contract (TPE program) obtained in 1998 by the company Apteryx in collaboration with Unit 494 INSERM (French National Institute of Health). The funding was awarded to support the collaboration between a company and a research laboratory for the development of a user-friendly application dedicated to the analysis of biomedical image series and including sophisticated analysis tools developped within a research lab that has been involved in the analysis of medical image series for almost twenty years. The idea underlying the Pixies project was to use the internet to make the most recent sophisticated medical image analysis tools, including the original method of factor analysis of medical image series, available to the largest medical and research community.

Factor analysis example: perfusion of an osteosarcoma in functional MRI
